The Benefits of Bariatric Surgery
As we get older our metabolism naturally starts to slow down, making easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. To combat this many people turn to dieting and exercising. While this can work for some people, for others it’s an uphill battle; diets leave them hungry and unsatisfied, exercising is tedious and leaves them tired, and the results just aren’t significant. Exercise can be especially difficult for someone who is obese, since their own weight works against them. If you find yourself struggling to lose weight and keep it off, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery.
At Advanced Surgical and Weight Loss Institute, we specialize in a variety of weight loss programs including robotic surgery and bariatric surgery. Depending on the amount of weight you wish to lose, the amount of time you have been overweight and weight loss methods you have already tried, we will work with you to create a customized treatment plan to specifically fit your needs.
Bariatric Surgery
You could be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you have been obese for five years or more and have been unable to lose weight through other traditional methods such as exercise, medications and dieting. Bariatric surgery is found to be very effective in most patients, with a success rate of over 80 percent. Not only could bariatric surgery help you lose weight, it could also reduce type 2 diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and other conditions associated with obesity.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
This is a type of bariatric surgery that reduces the stomach’s size, prompting the patient to become full faster and not be able to eat as much food. It also limits the amount of calories that are absorbed and improves digestion.
Lap Band
An inflatable silicone device is surgically placed inside the stomach to decrease the appetite and the amount of food the patient can consume. Also a form of bariatric surgery, it is designed for obese patients with a BMI of 35 or greater. The unique thing about a lap band is that it can be adjusted to be tighter or more loose. This way if a patient is not losing weight fast enough, it can be tightened to speed up the process, or if the patient becomes pregnant it can be loosened to allow room for the fetus to grow.
